Australian high-quality, counter-seasonal table grapes for Japan

With Australian grapes' long season, our exports fill a market niche that competitor products can’t reach and represent a new lucrative market for the Australian table grape industry.

Australian table grape exports to Japan continue to improve. In late February 2015, representatives from Japan’s five key fruit importers, accompanied by local Japanese media, met with table grape growers, packers and exporters in Melbourne and Victoria’s Sunraysia region over three days to discuss business opportunities.

The mission was jointly organised by Austrade and the Victorian Government to boost demand for Victoria’s table grapes. The Australian Table Grape Association estimates Australia exported 70,000 tonnes of table grapes worth A$200 million to 52 countries in 2013, up from A$105 million in 2012. Victoria supplies around 94 per cent of Australia’s total table grape exports.

Australia undertook a trial shipment of table grapes to Japan in 2014, exporting 16 containers of table grape varieties such as Thomson Seedless, Crimson Seedless and Red Globe.

It is estimated that the Japanese market for table grapes could be worth up to A$40 million over the next five years. The Australian Table Grape Association plans to increase export volume to Japan to 10,000 tonnes in five years. JAEPA will expand this opportunity by giving preferential access to Australian table grapes during Australia’s export seasons.
